Macular Degeneration

Have you ever thought about what allows you to see color and detail? It is a tiny part of your eye called the fovea which is part of the macula at the back of your eye. However as we age, this small yet vital area can start to break down, leading to a condition called Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD). The tricky part? AMD often doesn’t show any symptoms until it starts affecting your vision, making regular eye exams critical to catch it early.

What Causes AMD?

The causes of Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) are complex and scientists believe factors like lifestyle and family history are all involved. Those with a family history of AMD have a higher risk. Habits like smoking and eating high-fat foods might also be linked to AMD.

Who is at Risk?

Certain groups are more likely to develop AMD:

  • People over 50 years old.
  • Those with a family history of AMD.
  • Overweight individuals and those with heart disease.
  • People of Caucasian descent.
  • Smokers and those exposed to cigarette smoke.

Spotting AMD

AMD mostly results in a gradual loss of central vision. You won’t feel pain, but you might find that your vision is getting blurry, making it harder to read or drive.

If you’re around 50 and notice any change in your vision, it is important to see your optometrist right away to check if it could be AMD.

Treatment Options for AMD

The key to treating AMD is early detection through regular eye exams, particularly if you’re over 50. Although there’s no cure for certain types of AMD, certain vitamins like lutein and vitamins E and C may help slow it down.

Other forms of AMD have more treatment options. Medications and in some cases ocular injections, can prevent the growth of new blood vessels in the retina, helping to maintain your vision for longer.

Remember, AMD is often silent until it starts impacting your vision, so do not wait for symptoms to appear. Regular eye exams are your best defense. If you are due for a checkup, make an appointment today.
