Dry Eye

What causes Dry Eyes?

Dry eyes can occur when there is a problem with your regular tears or tear distribution. These are not the kind of tears that flow when you’re watching a heart wrenching movie. We have ‘maintenance’ tears that keep our eyes moist and healthy every minute of the day. They are made up of oil, water, and mucus. Any issue with these components, or the lid itself, which distribute these tears, can lead to dry eyes. Environmental demands can also contribute to dry eye. Patients will suffer and avoid tasks without realizing there is help around the corner. That is where we can help

Certain things make dry eyes more likely are:

  • Taking medications that list dry eyes as a side effect (decongestants, acne medicine, birth control, anti-depressants)
  • Being over 50, as tear production can decrease with age
  • Having an immune disorder like Lupus or Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • Dealing with seasonal allergies
  • Working in dry or dusty condition

Symptoms of Dry Eyes:

  • Eyes feeling gritty or scratchy, or turning red
  • Burning sensation in your eyes
  • Problems with your vision such as blurriness, difficulty seeing at night, or light sensitivity
  • Difficulty tolerating contact lenses

These symptoms can be sneaky and may not be glaringly obvious at first. But if you are experiencing any of the above, we recommend you getting a thorough evaluation and potential treatment plan. It’s time to say goodbye to red, itchy, and gritty eyes and say hello to comfortable and clear vision!
